A wind hinting at the near-constant winter season of this landscape blew past her, bringing with it scents of snow, prey, and the camp. With renewed vigor, Aster pulled forward, feeling her muscles burn with effort. The atmosphere at camp had just become too suffocating. She couldn't handle it. It seemed like everyone was so close to one another, closing her out of the circle. Aster paused a moment, sitting down by a large grey boulder. But how could she really expect them to like her? She was an outsider, some ex-soldier who'd run away. Chills raced down her spine as she remembered what sent her away. Suddenly she thought she smelled the sticky aroma of blood on a hot summer day. Her eyes widened, showing the white at the edge of her cold steel eyes, and she leapt forward, almost propelling herself off the edge of the narrow path she was following. Her mother's jewels flew off her head, sliding down the gravel decline. Paws slipping, she tumbled down the mountainside in an effort to catch them. When she finally had them back, she realized her paw pads were torn up pretty good. Serves me right, she thought. A little pain will remind me I'm in the mountains now. Not back home. She found that she had reached ground more level, towards the base of the mountain. The scent of camp was much behind her, and she was free to be on her own for a little while. She padded over to a large rock, the result of some sort of rockslide from ages past. Her black claws bit into the gray stone as she scaled it. The sun bore down on her when she reached the flat top of it. Stretching out and relaxing after her long descent, she realized there was another scent on this stone. Who but her would travel this far from camp to sunbathe in private. Absentmindedly, she wondered if they were still around. Laughingly, she called out, "Anyone there? It's a nice day out, you should come on up."
